Model boats banned from lake over speed fears
People with model boats have been banned from using a park's lake, unless they are taking part in a session run by a local boat club.
Stevenage Borough Council said the sign was erected at Fairlands Valley Park to stop people outside of the club from "using high-powered model boats" on Millennium Lake.
Ian Searle, secretary of Stevenage Model Boat Club, said there were model boats you can buy off the shelf that travel at speeds of 60-70mph (up to 112km/h).
"Those without experience, who are generally not insured, can try them out on the lake which is likely to cause an accident," he said.
Searle said restrictions were put on members a few years ago, with boats with internal combustion engines banned.
"The sign by Millennium Lake was aimed at other people, just to take away the free for all for everyone else," he said.
The council said Stevenage Model Boat Club had "specific sessions at the lake and it is aware of the restrictions that are in place".
A spokesperson added: "Anyone looking to use an authorised type of model boat is welcome to use the lake by contacting the club directly."
