Moorland wildfire operation to 'run into next week'
Firefighters and partner agencies are expected to remain at the scene of a major moorland wildfire into next week.
Teams have been tackling the flames, declared a major incident on Monday, three weeks after the fire started on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop, Derbyshire.
The A628 Woodhead Pass remains closed so responders and vehicles can get to and from the scene safely, and nearby residents have been urged to keep windows and doors closed.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) said it was co-operating closely with colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service as fires on Saddleworth and Swineshaw moors reportedly merged with the Tintwistle blaze.
DFRS said its efforts were currently focused on four key areas, namely Didsbury Intake, Featherbed Moss, Arnfield Moor and Crowden.
Two helicopters are dropping water on both Tintwistle and across the county border at Dovestone Reservoir and Swineshaw Moor.
A spokesperson said the current wind direction is carrying smoke from both fires towards Manchester, but a forecasted shift in wind direction early next week could mean smoke affects more communities on the Derbyshire side of the border, including Padfield and Hadfield.
DFRS thanked the public for their continued support and reminded people to keep away from the affected areas.
