New York Yankees' World Series Hopes May Have Just Collapsed

The New York Yankees have been absolutely ravaged by injuries all season long, but somehow, some way, they have managed to stay afloat.

I know Yankees fans won't like to hear this, but it's a testament to just how fine of a job manager Aaron Boone has done this year.

But in the midst of all of New York's health issues, one thing has always been clear: if the Yankees can get their guys back, they will be clear favorites to represent the American League in the World Series ... and perhaps even challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger have all been the primary culprits.

Judge last played on May 31 due to a rib stress fracture. Stanton has been sidelined since late April due to multiple calf strains. Bellinger has been on the shelf for weeks as a result of a hamstring pull.

But while Judge is slowly making progress and Bellinger is likely due back next week, Stanton's rehab has been much more mysterious.

And on Saturday, Boone revealed a deflating piece of information: Stanton suffered yet another calf strain while running the bases during his rehab this week.

Considering Stanton has been out for nearly four months while recovering from the first two strains, it seems very hard to imagine the 36-year-old returning before the end of the season. Stanton's 2026 campaign may very well be done, and the Yankees' World Series hopes have taken a massive hit with it.

Let's not sit here and pretend that Stanton's bat isn't one of the most valuable pieces of equipment in New York's clubhouse. Especially in the playoffs.

Stanton has proven to be the second coming of Mr. October for the Yankees, nearly single-handedly leading them to a World Series appearance two years ago and putting together countless unbelievably clutch moments in the Bronx over the better part of the last decade.

While Judge's playoff struggles are well-documented, Stanton has been a calming presence, and the last guy opposing pitchers want to see at the plate in crunchtime.

But it doesn't look like we will be seeing Playoff Stanton this year, and while New York certainly has top-tier talent outside of the former NL MVP, is there anyone on this roster you actually trust in a big spot in the postseason as much as Stanton?

It's not just Stanton's ability to leave the yard at the most opportune times; it's also his gravity in the lineup. Don't think for a second that his presence does not provide a significant boost to Judge, Ben Rice and the rest of the Yankees' sluggers.

Luis Garcia Jr. is nice and all, but pitchers would surely rather see his name in the lineup than Stanton's when push comes to shove.

Then there's what this could mean for Stanton's long-term future in the Bronx. We may very well have seen the last of Big G in pinstripes, and if it is, then it's fitting that his last plate appearance resulted in a clutch RBI base hit against the Houston Astros.

But this year? Right now? Stanton's latest injury update may have been the final blow to the Yankees' championship hopes.
