Warning issued as Environment Canada tracks thunderstorm possibly producing tornado
The national weather agency issued a red tornado warning for part of Yellowhead County, Alta., Saturday afternoon.
Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that might be producing a tornado, the alert says, adding that damaging winds, large hail and intense rainfall are also possible.
As of 5:10 p.m. MT, the storm was 35 kilometres northwest of Edson, Alta., and travelling east at 45 km/h, the alert says.
"This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," the alert says.
Environment Canada advises people to immediately hide in a basement, "interior room," or sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches.
If no such shelter is available, the agency says people should lie in a low spot and protect their heads from flying debris.
Anyone out on a body of water should return to shore and seek shelter or move out of the tornado's path, the alert says. Otherwise, they should wear a lifejacket, lie face down and protect their heads.
