Parts of Toronto could get over 50 mm of rain Monday: Environment Canada

Expect thunderstorms Monday afternoon and for water to pool on roads and other low areas, says agency

Parts of Toronto could see more than 50 mm of rain and thunderstorms on Monday, according to an advisory from Environment Canada.

Some areas of the city have already received up to 25 mm of rain Monday morning, according to Environment Canada. The rain will likely continue into the afternoon and evening, according to the agency, with embedded thunderstorms expected in the afternoon.

The total rainfall amount will likely vary from 30 mm to 50 mm, but some places could see even more.

"Additional local rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 mm are possible, especially for areas that receive thunderstorms," the notice from Environment Canada states.

The agency said it may need to issue rainfall warnings later and water will likely pool on roads and low-lying areas.

According to a social media post from the city, severe rain caused a bypass at the Ashbridges Bay water treatment plant Monday morning at 7:51 a.m.

"All wastewater is disinfected and treated per strict provincial and federal regulations," the post read.

The temperature on Monday is expected to reach a high of 24 C with a humidex of 29.
