The Public Health Agency of Canada has closed its investigation on salmonella infections linked to pistachios, declaring Tuesday that the outbreak appears to be over.

Numerous recalls were issued over the past year when people who became sick reported eating products containing pistachios, such as Dubai-style chocolate, baklava, nut mixes, ice cream, and pizza or sandwiches containing pistachio cream.

While the outbreak is under control domestically, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s temporary import restriction on pistachios from Iran remains in effect due to possible salmonella contamination.

“Investigation findings identified pistachios from Iran and products made with pistachios from Iran as the source of the outbreak,” the agency’s public health notice says.

Between March 2025 and May 2026, there were 200 laboratory-confirmed cases of salmonella across Canada, with 91 in Quebec. Of the cases reported, 26 people were hospitalized. No deaths were recorded.
