Police crack down on speeding and illegal exhausts
Drivers caught speeding, using illegal number plates and creating excessive noise have been targeted in a police road safety operation.
During roadside checks in Plymouth on 6 August, Devon and Cornwall Police identified seven vehicles with illegal number plates. Two drivers were caught speeding on West Hoe Road, while six were found exceeding the limit on Millbay Road and three on Durnford Street.
Seven motorcyclists had bikes fitted with illegal exhausts that created excessive noise. The riders have been given a week to fit legal exhaust systems and pass a further MoT test, officers said.
The action followed concerns from residents about antisocial driving, said police.
Police said several vehicles failed to stop when signalled by officers.
Their registration numbers were recorded and the drivers would face prosecution at court, the force said.
Insp Olly Barrett said: "We know dangerous and inconsiderate driving is a concern for our communities, particularly during the busy summer months when there are more people using our roads.
"Operations like this are an important part of our work to identify those who put others at risk and to take action against drivers who choose not to follow the law."
He said officers would continue carrying out patrols and enforcement activity throughout the year to help keep roads safe for residents, businesses and visitors.
