Police name teenager killed in Toronto shooting on Monday afternoon

Locals will gather at the Jane and Finch intersection on Tuesday evening to mourn the death of a 17-year-old in a fatal daylight shooting.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Toronto police were called to a shooting in the area of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West.

When they arrived at the scene, police found a teenage boy who had been shot. Officers tried life-saving measures, and the victim was rushed to hospital by paramedics.

Later, he was pronounced dead at hospital.

On Tuesday morning, police identified him as Cashie Auguste, Toronto’s 24th homicide victim of the year.

An event has been organized to mourn his death, as residents come to terms with the shooting.

“This vigil is an opportunity for residents, families, youth, faith leaders, community organizations, and emergency service personnel, including police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and other first responders, to come together in solidarity, reflection, healing, and support for those impacted by this tragic event,” a notice announcing the vigil said.

“It is a chance for our community to stand together against violence, support those affected, and demonstrate our collective commitment to safety, compassion, and community well-being.”

Pastor Delroy Sherman said the shooting was evidence that not enough is being done to crack down on gun violence.

“It is very sickening, frightening,” he said on Tuesday. “Why (are) the youths killing one another? But we ask the government — you have to do something. We have the power and the intelligence to change the gun law. Enough is not being done.”

Auguste was a student at CW Jeffreys School, which informed families one of its students had died in a shooting, Global News has learned.

“Shortly after the end of school this afternoon, one of our students tragically lost their life following a shooting in the community,” the letter read.

“We are deeply saddened by what has occurred and our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the families and individuals impacted.”
