Police search for missing pilot believed to have flown small plane over Kawartha Lakes, Ont.

Last known location of single-seat home-built aircraft believed to be around Balsam Lake: police

Police are searching for a missing pilot who was flying a single-seat aircraft that is believed to have travelled into Ontario's Kawartha Lakes region.

The small blue homemade plane, with "FOFZ" on the tail, failed to land as expected, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a post on X on Saturday.

Durham Regional Police said in a post on X on Saturday that the pilot, 73, whose first name is David, left the Oshawa Airport in the plane at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and was expected to return at 9:30 a.m.

Police did not provide his surname but described him as an experienced pilot who is five foot seven with a slim build. He has black and grey hair and a moustache.

He usually flies in the area south of Kawartha Lakes township and north of Lake Scugog, police said. The last known location of the aircraft is believed to be around Balsam Lake.

Durham police said they are working with the OPP and the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre to search for the missing pilot.

Anyone who knows his whereabouts is urged to call Durham police.
