IIO looking for witnesses to fatal incident that took place overnight

B.C.'s police watching is investigating a shooting incident involving police that left one man dead overnight.

The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) said that at 11:30 p.m. PT on July 26, officers were called to a gas station as part of a property crime investigation.

When they arrived, they found two men "engaged in criminal activity."

When police tried to arrest the men, the pair tried to flee in a Dodge Ram pickup truck. AbbyPD says at some point during the interaction, a police officer fired their gun.

A police chase ensued westbound on Highway 1, but police say the chase was called off for public safety reasons. The vehicle was last seen by AbbyPD officers headed toward Langley.

A few hours later, just after 3 a.m. PT on July 27, a Langley resident reported a suspicious truck parked in their driveway with a man inside. Langley RCMP and first responders arrived and pronounced the man — determined to be one of those involved in the Abbotsford incident — dead at the scene.

Police say the second suspect remains at large.

An AbbyPD spokesperson confirmed in an email to CBC News that the Langley scene is connected to the officer-involved shooting in Abbotsford. They said there is no ongoing risk to the public.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is looking for witnesses who may have seen what happened in Abbotsford Sunday night or in Langley early Monday morning.

The IIO is called in to investigate when serious harm or death comes as a result of a police interaction in B.C.
