Prolonged period of heat coming to southern Manitoba, Environment Canada says

Temperatures to rise Friday through the weekend and last well into next week

A “long duration heat event” is expected to hit Winnipeg and the bulk of southern Manitoba starting Friday and stick around well into next week.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning much of southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan of temperatures hovering in the mid-30s this weekend.

Temperatures are expected to approach 30 C on Friday, with muggy conditions expected especially along and south of the Trans-Canada highway, Environment Canada said in a news release.

On Sunday, humidex values could reach as high as 45.

While temperatures and humidex values are expected to ease slightly early next week, daytime highs are likely to remain in the high 20s to low 30s range for most of the week, the federal agency said.

Environment Canada says heat warnings will be issued as needed.
