Rainfall warning in effect for P.E.I.

Saturday remains wet and windy, with conditions set to ease by Monday, says CBC meteorologist

All of Prince Edward Island is under a rainfall warning from Environment Canada as heavy rain and strong winds hit the province.

Flash flooding has affected several areas, closing South Greenwood Drive in Summerside from Notre Dame Street onward until further notice.

Summerside received between 93 and 114 millimetres of rain from Thursday night to Saturday morning, while Bonshaw recorded an Island-high 127 millimetres, according to CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland.

Wind gusts reached 50 to 80 km/h across the province over the past 24 hours, peaking at 89 km/h in East Point on Friday night.

RCMP reported fallen trees across the Island. Meanwhile, power outages affected up to 1,500 Maritime Electric customers, with 378 still without power as of 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Island could see another 20 to 40 millimetres of rain Saturday.

Rain will lighten on Sunday, though northerly winds will continue with gusts up to 70 km/h.

Conditions are expected to improve Sunday night into early Monday as winds ease and showers taper off.

Environment Canada reminds drivers never to drive through flooded roads.
