Rice to launch Master of Artificial Intelligence program in fall 2027

Rice University is set to launch a new Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI) program in the fall of 2027. This program aims to prepare students with computer science backgrounds for careers building and deploying AI systems. The 30-credit-hour, nonthesis professional degree will be offered by the Department of Computer Science and will begin accepting applications this fall.

The program is designed to train students for roles such as AI and machine learning engineers, AI architects and applied AI researchers. The initiative aligns with Rice’s Momentous strategic plan, which emphasizes responsible AI as a critical factor and advocates for educational programs that equip graduates for the changing demands of the workforce

“AI is creating new opportunities across disciplines, and universities have an important role in preparing graduates and professionals to navigate that changing landscape,” said Rice Provost Amy Dittmar. “The MAI reflects Rice’s commitment to developing graduate programs that respond to advances in technology and the changing needs of the workforce.”

The new degree will combine coursework in AI foundations with practical learning throughout the three-semester program.

“AI is rapidly moving from research laboratories into the systems that shape how we work, learn and solve complex problems,” said Luay Nakhleh, the William and Stephanie Sick Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing. “The MAI will give students the technical depth and practical experience to build these systems responsibly, from developing models to deploying them in real-world settings.”

The MAI will merge mathematical and computational foundations with practical experience in building, deploying and maintaining modern AI systems. Students will complete the on-campus program in three semesters.

The program will feature small cohorts and direct access to faculty, ensuring a personalized graduate experience. A required internship will provide students the opportunity to apply their learning in a professional environment before completing their degree.

The MAI will complement existing graduate programs in computer science and data science at Rice, focusing specifically on the technical foundations and engineering of AI systems.

Unlike Rice’s Master of Computer Science, which offers breadth across computing, or its Master of Data Science, which focuses on analytics, the MAI will provide specialized depth in AI architectures, training and deployment. The program is designed specifically for engineers who want to build and deploy AI systems.

Houston’s unique economy, anchored by the world’s largest medical center, an energy sector undergoing AI-driven transformation and a thriving aerospace ecosystem, creates direct internship and career opportunities across industries building AI systems, said Chris Jermaine, chair of Rice’s Department of Computer Science.

“The Master of Artificial Intelligence reflects the graduate education Rice is working to advance: rigorous, forward-looking and connected to the challenges graduates will encounter in their careers,” Jermaine said. “Combining strong academic foundations with practical experience will prepare students to contribute thoughtfully and responsibly as AI continues to evolve.”
