Robert Eggers Drops Notable Details About Upcoming ‘Werwulf’ Film
2026 has already been a great year for horror, but there are still some big releases on the docket. One of the most anticipated films left this year is Robert Eggers' "Werwulf."
Fresh from the success of "Nosferatu," Eggers is sticking with the world of gothic horror. Esquire just released the first image from "Werwulf," and also landed an interview with Eggers.
In addition to the first look, Eggers confirmed that the film will feature dialogue spoken in 1300s Middle English.
"Sjón is just incredibly imaginative and inspiring," Eggers told Esquire. "We worked with two Oxford professors on the dialogue, which is in Middle English, and then worked extensively with a dialect coach on a way to temper the pronunciation in a way that would be understandable to modern audiences."
Lily Rose Depp is reuniting with Eggers after the two worked together on "Nosferatu." According to Eggers, she's playing a very different type of role in "Werwulf."
"Lily, she is the heart of the movie. Lily is truly transformative," Eggers said. "There’s a very clear physical change in her body and her makeup, but she inhabits a very different person that’s very different from her and very different from any character she’s ever played. She’s Aaron’s wife, and she’s a mother of several children and also a farmer. She’s sort of the most gracious person in the film."
Eggers likes authenticity in his film, so naturally, a film about werewolves will feature real wolves, as well, which the director confirmed.
"We worked with wolf-dog hybrids, which we also worked with in Nosferatu," Eggers said. "But Aaron spent time with a real wolf, and we learned a lot about the wolf’s behavior. We incorporated a lot of what we learned into his performance and his interactions with Lily and some of the other things that he does in the film."
