Say it ain’t snow! Sunshine Village in Banff posts photos of first snow of season

Didn’t they just wrap up a summer snow season at Sunshine Village Ski Resort?

The Banff National Park-based ski resort, which extended ski season for a couple of weeks on June 21, posted photos of its first snow day of the fall on Sunday, a full three weeks before fall officially arrives.

“We’ve got a snow day on our hands,” Sunshine posted. “Hello winter! Who’s ready for ski and snowboard season to begin?”

While it might be presumptuous to answer, ‘absolutely nobody’, the first snow day of 2026 in the Rocky Mountains actually arrived almost a full week later than the first snow day of 2025, which CTV News reported last Aug. 24, 2025.

On that day, four resorts, including Sunshine Village, Nakiska, Lake Louise and Kicking Horse Ski Resort all reported snow.

Sunday, Kicking Horse Resort posted some snow day photos of its own on its social media feed.

“First snow has entered the chat,” Kicking Horse posted. “A little snow? No problem. A few more bike laps? Absolutely. Winter mode? Loading...

“One foot in summer, one foot in winter. We’ll take it.”

No word yet on when either resort anticipates opening for winter ski season.
