Senate poised to add Claude to staffers’ AI tools
Staffers already have access to ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot.
The Senate is expected to give staffers access to Claude, Anthropic’s artificial intelligence chatbot, for their work, according to two people with knowledge of the matter who were granted anonymity to discuss nonpublic information.
The move would add to a growing set of AI tools available to congressional staff, as individual offices decide how to deploy the technology.
Sergeant at Arms Jennifer Hemingway testified in April that the chamber’s staff had access to Microsoft’s Copilot, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. She also said the office was leading an AI working group tasked with discussing the legislative branch’s AI uses and needs.
Both the House and the Senate have issued internal guidance on the use of AI tools by congressional staff for official business through the House Chief Administrative Office and the Senate Sergeant at Arms, both of which provide tech support to their respective chambers.
