Several sandwich brands sold by Calgary company recalled for possible listeria

Fresh Bites Inc. sells sandwiches to airlines, convenience stores and other quick-service restaurant chains

Various types of sandwiches have been recalled in Alberta because of possible listeria risk.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the recall mostly involves Fresh & Local brand and Fresh Bites brand sandwiches. It says there have been no reported illnesses.

The agency says food contaminated with listeria may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, with symptoms including vomiting, nausea, fever and aches.

In a statement to CBC News, a CFIA spokesperson said the agency is conducting a food safety investigation and is in the process of verifying that the recalled products have been removed from circulation.

Fresh Bites said in an emailed statement to CBC News on Friday that it initiated the recall with CFIA.

"We understand a food recall is concerning, and we are taking this matter seriously. Production at our Calgary facility has been suspended. Fresh Bites is working with CFIA and AHS, as it looks to resolve this matter," the company said.
