Shafique breaks 49

Abdullah Shafique became the first Pakistan batter since 1977 to score more than 150 in a Test in the West Indies as the Asian side took control of the second ICC World Test Championship contest in Trinidad with a dominant display on Tuesday.

Shafique scored an unbeaten 160* to help power Pakistan to 387 and an overall lead of 43 runs on the first innings, before Sajid Khan put the West Indies on the backfoot as he claimed four wickets to reduce the hosts to 103/6 at stumps on the third day.

It was Shafique that stole the show earlier in the day as he continued to score freely at the Queen's Park Oval venue and became just the fifth Pakistan batter to surpass 150 in Tests in the Caribbean and the first to do so since Majid Khan scored 167 in Guyana in 1977.

It was only Jomel Warrican (6/112) that kept the West Indies in the hunt, with Shafique looking at ease as he hit 15 fours and three sixes during his knock as Pakistan attempt to claim the second Test and level the two-match series after a 90-run defeat in the opening fixture.

The absence of Brandon King due to a back complaint didn't help the West Indies' cause in the second innings, with the right-hander unable to bat and the side unsure whether the opener will be fit to feature on the crucial fourth day at Port of Spain.

"Following initial medical assessments, Brandon King is experiencing lower back muscle spasms," the West Indies confirmed via a statement.

"He is currently being monitored and evaluated by the team's medical staff. As a precaution, the batter will not return to the field for the remainder of today's play."

King's availability will be crucial for the West Indies as they attempt to fight back on the fourth day, with skipper Roston Chase falling for 17 on the final delivery of the day on Tuesday leaving in-form all-rounder Justin Greaves as the not out batter.

Despite the late blow West Indies bowling coach Ravi Rampaul believes his side is capable of opening up a sizeable run chase for Pakistan and can still win the Test.

"At this stage though, and given the way the pitch is playing, if we can somehow push the lead to 150 we would have a chance," Rampaul said.
