Stéphane Dion says joining EU a 'false good idea'
Canada's former special envoy to the EU Stéphane Dion, who also served as a Liberal foreign affairs minister, says it would be a bad idea for Canada to join the European Union, an idea that has repeatedly come up in recent months. In testimony to the Senate on June 3, Dion noted some EU countries still haven't ratified the trade deal with Canada known as CETA, and Ottawa would need to cede provincial sovereignty to Brussels.
