Street hockey tournament to take over Calgary's downtown
Play On! street hockey tournament returning to Calgary
Chance for teams to be joined by star players
A street hockey tournament of epic proportions is returning to Calgary this August.
Play On! is predicted to cover 10 downtown city blocks and transform the area with 20 temporary rinks when it descends on Calgary Aug. 20-22.
It has one goal in mind: bring 300 teams together and host the largest street hockey event in Canada since 2017.
The grassroots organization, sponsored by Hockey Alberta and Hockey Calgary, started in 2002 and has hosted 182 events across Canada so far, garnering 2.5 million participants nationwide.
The teams that raise the most money for a local charity will get priority in choosing a celebrity participant to coach or play on their team.
Celebrity picks for this year's tournament in Calgary include Stanley Cup champions Duane Sutter, Kelly Buchberger and Mike Vernon, and Canadian Olympian Cassidy Gray.
