‘Supergirl’ Falls Short With $38 Million Opening Weekend
"Supergirl," the latest Warner Bros and DC Studios superhero film, grossed a disappointing $38 million at North American theaters over its opening weekend, according to early numbers reported by the Hollywood trade publications, falling short of projections and coming in second place for the weekend as "Toy Story 5" continues to dominate the box office.
"Supergirl" star Milly Alcock attends the film's world premiere on June 22, 2026.
"Supergirl" was expected to open in second place to Disney and Pixar's animated blockbuster, but initial projections were originally much more optimistic—Box Office Pro predicted the film would gross somewhere in the $40-$50 million range, while the studio was projecting upwards of $55 million, Deadline reported last week.
The superhero flick reportedly cost about $175 million to produce, not including marketing, meaning it will need to make more than $375 million to break even as theaters typically take about 50% of ticket sales, Variety reported.
"Supergirl" also earned about $30 million from international theaters, for a global gross of about $68 million.
The film, which stars Milly Alcock as the titular character, has gotten mixed reviews—earning a 56% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and 77% audience score, while only receiving a B- from Cinemascore surveys.
It's a disappointing second showing for DC Studios, whose first entry into its revamped DC Extended Universe was last year's "Superman"—a massive hit with a $125 million opening weekend.
'Toy Story 5' Continues Record-Breaking Run
"Toy Story 5" extended its blockbuster run in theaters this weekend, grossing another $70 million—only a 56% decline from its about $160 million opening weekend. The fifth entry into the beloved Pixar series was also this year's biggest debut, surpassing "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," and set the franchise opening weekend record. Over the last two weeks in theaters, "Toy Story 5" has already grossed an estimated $297 million in North America and $585 worldwide. This puts it on track to break the franchise record for total box office gross, currently held by "Toy Story 4" which made a total of $1.07 billion in 2019. It could also challenge the record for Pixar's biggest film ever, which is currently held by "Inside Out 2" which grossed $1.69 billion in 2024.
What Other Films Ranked At the Box Office This Weekend?
After "Toy Story 5" and "Supergirl," third place went "Obsession," the low-budget horror feature directed by sketch comedy YouTuber Curry Barker that became a phenomenon and broke records earlier this year. "Obsession" grossed another $9.8 million this weekend, bringing its total to $233.9 million at the domestic box office after seven weeks in theaters. It's an incredible showing for a film that only reportedly cost about $750,000 to produce. Fourth place went to "Jackass: Best and Last," the weekend's other debut. The final installment in the iconic prank comedy franchise grossed about $8.4 million in North American theaters. Fifth place went to Steven Spielberg's "Disclosure Day," which grossed about $8.1 million over its third weekend in theaters.
