Suspect in Berlin Pride attack killed by police
Police in Germany have fatally shot a man suspected of driving a vehicle into a crowd near the Berlin Pride festival on Saturday night, killing one person and injuring 29 others.
German police and media outlets report the vehicle plowed into a crowd near the capital's Brandenburg Gate.
Following a search, police said they located the suspect on Sunday and fatally shot him as he ran toward officers with a "stabbing weapon." The 21-year-old suspect had been under police surveillance for suspected connections with Islamist networks.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
Visiting the scene of the attack, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said: "We will not allow this poison of terrorism -- this poison that threatens our freedom -- to continue to spread throughout our society. Regardless of any party-political differences of opinion, we will defend the freedom of our society."
