T.C.H. closed in both directions near Southern Harbour due to crash
No timeline for when T.C.H. could reopen, as both directions closed near Southern Harbour
Visibility is poor due to heavy fog in the area, RCMP says
A vehicle collision has shut down a section of the Trans-Canada Highway on N.L.'s Avalon Peninsula, and it's not clear when it could re-open.
The RCMP said just after noon on Friday that both directions are closed just east of Jack's Pond, near the exit to the Southern Harbour.
There are no detours available, the police service said.
"Visibility is poor due to heavy fog in the area," the RCMP said in a media release. "Motorists are being asked to approach the area with extra caution, and follow all instructions from police and emergency responders at the scene."
Police are describing the collision as serious but have not released further details.
In an update on social media around 2 p.m. NT, the police service said the highway remains impassable and is expected to remain that way for "an undetermined period."
Drivers are being asked to delay travel plans.
"RCMP N.L. recognizes this closure is causing significant disruption and appreciates the public’s patience, understanding and cooperation as emergency responders continue their work at the scene," the RCMP said.
