Thune weighs in on AI oversight as experts warn of risks
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Sen. John Thune is sharing his thoughts on artificial intelligence after President Trump said his oversight alone is enough to make sure AI models don’t go rogue, which researchers warn could wipe out humanity.
“I think there’s a lot of hyperbole around this issue, but I don’t think for a minute that we ought to cede the future when it comes to AI, to China, or any other adversary,” Thune said. “I think we need to lead in that realm and make sure that Americans are benefiting from what I think are going to be some pretty important benefits from AI, but I also think that you have to mitigate against the I would say the sort of advanced. Um, risk systems when it with respect to AI which you want to call the frontier models.”
Top tech experts say even installing a kill switch won’t be enough to stop super-intelligent AI in the future.
Speaking to CNN, the so-called “godfather of AI,” Geoffrey Hinton, fears it could become so powerful that it will be able to persuade the people in charge of the switch not to pull it.
Other experts believe a kill switch could help, but the people in charge might not realize the need to pull it until it’s too late.
