Tornado warning in effect for Temiskaming Shores, Temagami

Environment Canada says storm system moving southwest

Environment Canada issued a tornado warning before 6 p.m. ET for Temiskaming Shores and Temagami. In a release it said, "meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms that is possibly producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible."

The area affected stretches from near Gogama, east to Temiskaming Shores, and south toward North Bay.

The Greater Sudbury community of Capreol is just on the southwest edge of the affected area.

It said the tornado could happen near Temagami River Provincial Park, Marten River and Marten River Provincial Park.

"This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," the release said.

"Take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or a sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches. If no shelter is available, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. If you are out on the water when threatening weather approaches, return to shore and seek shelter, if possible. Otherwise, move away from the path of the tornado to escape. Wear your lifejacket, lie face down and protect your head."

Elsewhere in the northeast region the agency has issued severe storm and thunderstorm warnings.
