Trump appoints new White House press secretary
US President Donald Trump says he has appointed Katie Zacharia as the new White House press secretary.
Trump announced the appointment on social media on Friday, following the departure of former press secretary Karoline Leavitt in August.
Trump said Zacharia currently serves as senior communications advisor for the company that runs Truth Social, the social media platform he founded.
He added that Zacharia previously worked as a spokesperson at the Department of Homeland Security.
Trump also said Zacharia is an attorney and a frequent commentator on media outlets including Fox News, and that she was previously involved in his election campaigns.
On Friday, Trump told reporters that Zacharia is a "great person."
Zacharia wrote on social media, "Serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark is the honor of a lifetime."
She added, "The work ahead is to continue delivering strong results for our Country and communicating to the American people the major wins that this Administration is making every single day."
Meanwhile, Keith Sonderling was sworn in as US secretary of labor in front of Trump and other officials at the White House on Friday. He succeeded Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who resigned amid allegations of misconduct, including drinking while on duty and misusing public funds.
