Trump considers renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America'
US President Donald Trump claims that the US is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America amid his administration's intensifying feud with Canada.
Trump said in a social media post on Tuesday the US is "giving serious consideration to changing the name." He went on to say, "we don't expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer."
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes in North America. It borders the Canadian province of Ontario in the north and the US state of New York in the south.
In a separate post, Trump posted an image of a map with "Lake Ontario" crossed out and the words "Lake America" spelled out.
The two countries have been trading barbs after the US imposed 50-percent additional tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports, including dairy products and wine.
As countermeasures, the Canadian government announced on Tuesday that it will impose up to 50% tariffs on US imports, including steel and aluminum products, from September 8.
On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested that cutting off electricity to the US could be one option.
