Parks Canada has confirmed that a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway in Mount Revelstoke National Park has reopened to both lanes as of 3 p.m. Pacific time Friday following Thursday’s landslide.

The initial road closure and subsequent reopening to single-lane traffic happened 20 kilometres east of Revelstoke, with Parks Canada expecting two-way passage to return by Friday evening, May 29.

“Equipment operators on the scene have diverted water flow into a culvert and are hard at work clearing muck and debris off the road,” it posted on Facebook, thanking Highway 1 users for their patience.

With Parks Canada expecting more wet weather this weekend, motorists are encouraged to visit drivebc.ca for more updates and road conditions.

DriveBC says the Trans-Canada Highway has reopened Friday to single-lane alternating traffic in Mount Revelstoke National Park along the site of Thursday’s landslide.

Major delays are expected for drivers and the next update on the highway condition is slated for 2 p.m. May 29.

Ceara Kavanagh with B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit told Black Press Media by email that the landslide fell within a national park, so Parks Canada is better positioned to comment.

Parks Canada posted to Facebook that it first received reports of “debris flow” near the Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk after 7 p.m. May 28.

“Crews responded immediately and were able to mobilize geotechnical assessment before dark,” the federal agency wrote. “Warm daytime temperatures Thursday combined with overnight precipitation have resulted in significant water flow through the area.”

It added that it was spending Friday morning further assessing the situation, draining the area, clearing debris and ensuring Highway 1 is safe for travelers.

Highway 1 remains closed between Revelstoke and Golden due to a landslide.

Debris and rock were first reported on the Trans-Canada Highway west of the Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk in Mount Revelstoke National Park at about 7 p.m. Thursday.

At that time, DriveBC reported that crews were en route to the area.

About an hour later, Highway 1 was closed in both directions following the landslide.

The next update is available at 9 a.m. Friday, DriveBC says.

Highway 1 is closed due to a landslide Thursday, May 28, according to DriveBC.

The closure is between Revelstoke and Golden, specifically from Townley Street and 11th St. North for 142.8 kilometres.

The next update update is not expected until Friday morning, May 29.
