Team Canada continued to shine at the Canada Cup International Softball Championship in South Surrey Tuesday, and won their game against Venezuela 7-0, improving their tournament record to 2-0.

The Canadian Women’s National Team played a convincing 7-0 victory over Venezuela on Tuesday (July 7) at Softball City, with Paige Simpson opening the scoring with a two-run single in the second inning before Canada broke the game open in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Erika Polidori and an RBI double from Victoria’s Emma Entzminger, a Canada Cup release shared.

Morgan Rackel earned the win in the circle, allowing just one hit while striking out six over four scoreless innings.

Canada continued its strong all-around play with 10 hits, seven walks and another error-free defensive performance. Entzminger, Cloverdale’s Grace Messmer and Zoe Hicks each recorded two hits, while Polidori drove in three runs.

The Canada Elite Team — a blend of experienced veterans and emerging young talent competing for future opportunities with Softball Canada — picked up its first win of the tournament Tuesday as well, with a 5-3 victory over the 222’s, improving to 1-1.

With the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles on the horizon and softball returning to the Olympic program, every game serves as an important opportunity for athletes to impress national team coaches and strengthen their case for future selection, the release noted.

One of the most emotional moments of the tournament came before Tuesday night’s Team Canada vs. Venezuela matchup, when Team Venezuela received a standing ovation from the Softball City crowd.

Prior to first pitch, the Canada Cup recognized the team’s extraordinary resilience after last week’s devastating earthquake in Venezuela and the difficult journey they undertook to reach Surrey. The heartfelt tribute was met with sustained applause, underscoring the unifying power of sport and the international spirit of the Canada Cup.

Team Canada returns to action Wednesday evening (July 8) when they face New Zealand at 6:15 p.m. at Softball City.

After that, the Canada Elite team plays Czechia at 1 p.m., while Team Canada plays China at 6 p.m., followed by Canada vs. Chinese Taipei Development at 6 p.m. on Friday (July 10).

Playoff rounds start on Saturday, with finals set for Sunday (July 12) at Softball City in South Surrey.
