Waze brings Gemini AI to navigation with smarter voice search

Google-owned Waze is expanding its use of artificial intelligence with a suite of new features designed to make navigation more personalised, less distracting and better suited to different types of drivers.

The update introduces deeper integration with Google's Gemini AI assistant, enabling users to interact with the navigation app using natural language to search for destinations and report changes to road conditions. Alongside the AI enhancements, Waze is also rolling out personalised route recommendations, a quieter voice guidance option and a dedicated motorcycle mode.

One of the biggest additions is Gemini-powered destination search, which allows drivers to ask conversational questions such as "Find me a coffee shop that's open right now" or "Find me the nearest petrol station with the lowest prices." Instead of relying on precise keywords, the app responds with relevant destinations that can be selected using voice commands.

Waze has also expanded its Conversational Reporting feature, first introduced in 2024. Drivers can now use natural speech not only to report traffic incidents but also to flag road closures, incorrect addresses and other map updates. These reports are sent to local map editors for verification before being added to the platform.

The company is also making navigation more tailored to individual driving habits. Waze will now recommend routes based on previous journeys alongside its real-time traffic analysis. For example, drivers who consistently favour motorways over local roads will see those routes prioritised, although the feature can be switched off through the app's settings.

To reduce unnecessary interruptions, Waze is introducing a new "Less Chatty" mode. The option cuts back on voice prompts while continuing to provide essential alerts for turns, lane changes and road hazards, allowing users to focus on music or podcasts during longer drives.

Motorcyclists are also receiving dedicated support through a new Motorcycle Mode. The feature uses AI alongside Waze's community-driven mapping system to account for two-wheeler-specific routes, restrictions and hazards such as potholes, speed bumps, raised crossings, shoulder endings and narrow bridges. It also aims to provide more accurate estimated arrival times for riders. The mode is initially launching in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru and the Philippines, with additional markets expected to follow.

Most of the new features, including personalised navigation, Less Chatty mode and expanded Conversational Reporting, are rolling out globally on Android and iOS. Gemini-powered destination search is initially available to Waze's global beta community.

The latest update marks another step in Google's efforts to bring generative AI into its navigation products. While Google Maps has received several AI-powered capabilities over the past year, Waze is now gaining a more conversational experience while retaining the community-driven traffic information that has long distinguished the platform.
