Weekend storm causes mass power outages in parts of Newfoundland
Gusts could reach 100 to 110 km/h, possibly higher
Heavy wind caused unplanned power outages for thousands of customers in Newfoundland on Saturday.
Early Saturday afternoon, Newfoundland Power reported outages in the Clarenville area and the Bonavista Peninsula, through to Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor and surrounding areas.
Approximately 8,590 customers were impacted, with a restoration time unknown.
An Environment Canada wind warning remains in place for most Newfoundland, with gusts expected to increase through Saturday to over 100 km/h.
The warning extends from Deer Lake, through central Newfoundland, to the northern Avalon Peninsula.
Environment Canada meteorologist Rob Carroll told CBC Radio's Weekend AM the peak wind gusts will likely be felt in the north and northeastern portions of the island in the morning into the afternoon, and along the east coast and northern Avalon into the evening.
Environment Canada says the wind could cause damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters. Fully leafed trees are also more vulnerable to wind damage. Residents should secure loose objects on their property, and be prepared for power outages.
Some ferry services are also impacted.
