What's happening in Manitoba on Canada Day?
As people get ready for Canada Day on Wednesday, a variety of activities and events are scheduled throughout Manitoba for those who want to celebrate the country's 159th birthday.
Major events across Winnipeg and the province are listed below.
Additional activities and events are happening at the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre, Lower Fort Garry northeast of the city, and in neighbourhoods across Winnipeg, including Sage Creek, Transcona and Tyndall Park.
In Winnipeg, fireworks are happening at Princess Auto Stadium and Assiniboia Downs on Wednesday night.
Fireworks are also happening in Brandon, Selkirk, Steinbach and Thompson, while parades are being held in Thompson at 10 a.m. and in Gimli at 11 a.m.
The horse-racing track in western Winnipeg will host a Canada Day celebration, with fireworks and living racing in the evening.
The first race is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with fireworks set for 11 p.m.
Canada Day at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg begins with entertainment on the Lyric Stage at 11 a.m., with musical performances until 5 p.m. from Audrina Turenne, Begonia, Tommyphyll, the Winnipeg Steel Orchestra and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
The Assiniboine Park Conservancy will host family-friendly activities at the nearby Celebrate Stage, including a dance party for children, and face painting, food trucks and mascots at the Lyric Field.
The gardens at the Leaf will host a citizenship ceremony at 11 a.m., as well as bachata dance and salsa sessions, along with Indigenous fire and teepee teachings throughout the day.
The Forks will host family-friendly activities and entertainment near the confluence of the Assiniboine and Red rivers beginning at 10:30 a.m.
A citizenship ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m., with cultural activities, live music and performances to follow throughout the day.
The evening's entertainment features musical performances from Mitchell Makoons, Brandi Vezina, Tommyphyll and the Irvin Miller Band.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is offering free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the nearby Manitoba Children's Museum will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
The home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will host family-friendly fun throughout Wednesday, including balloon twisters, face painters and a street magician.
Princess Auto Stadium will open a tailgate area at noon, with dance and musical performances throughout the afternoon from Mason Hoop Dancers, Flying Lion Dance Troupe and Those Guys, among others.
The entertainment continues into the evening with more musical performances, topping it off with fireworks at 10:30 p.m.
Canada Day celebrations in Brandon begin at the Riverbank Discovery Centre at 11 a.m. and run until 11 p.m.
Live dances and musical performances are scheduled throughout the day, with activities for kids, along with food trucks and a market. Fireworks are set for 11 p.m.
Activities in Selkirk begin along the waterfront at 4 p.m and go until midnight, beginning with live music and ending with fireworks at 11 p.m.
There will also be a zone for kids featuring bubbles, glitter tattoos and hula hoops, along with a market with vendors.
There are family-friendly activities and entertainment planned at the Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Activities continue into the evening at Steinbach Soccer Park, with a DJ and food, concluding with fireworks at 10:45 p.m.
The festivities in Thompson begin with a parade at 10 a.m., followed by daylong activities at the Thompson Regional Community Centre, including a corn hole tournament, face painting, laser tag and mini-golf, along with performances at the arena.
Fireworks get underway at 11 p.m.
What's open and closed in Winnipeg
As for entertainment and shopping, many grocery stores, except for Costco, are open, but some might have reduced hours.
Liquor Marts in the city are open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., except for the one at True North Square, which is closed for the day.
CF Polo Park, Garden City Shopping Centre, Kildonan Place and Outlet Collection Winnipeg are open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Grant Park Shopping Centre and St. Vital Shopping Centre are closed.
Assiniboine Park Zoo and the Leaf are open, as are a number of museums, including the Manitoba Museum (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq (11 a.m. to 9 p.m.).
City facilities, including libraries and indoor swimming pools, are closed. Outdoor pools, spray pads and some wading pools will be open.
Garbage and recycling in Winnipeg will be collected according to the normal schedule.
The Brady Road landfill is open to commercial users only, from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Brady 4R Depot is open to residential users, but the depots on Pacific Avenue and Panet Road are not.
Canada Post offices, along with federal government offices and Service Canada locations, are closed on July 1.
Winnipeg Transit is offering an enhanced Sunday schedule, with additional Blue Line trips between Assiniboine Park and The Forks. Late-night bus service will also be available.
