Woman dies in car crash on busy road

A woman in her 60s has died in a car crash on a busy stretch of road.

Northumbria police said the crash happened on the A69 between Haydon Bridge and Hexham at about 13:30 BST on Saturday.

A black Honda travelling westbound was in collision with a Volkswagen Tiguan being driven by the woman in the opposite direction, the force said.

The diver of the Honda, a man in his 30s, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, police said.

A section of the road was closed for several hours and officers are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact investigators.

"This is an incredibly tragic incident where a woman has lost her life," Sgt Greg Huntley said.

He added: "We know this is a very busy stretch of road in Northumberland – and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions.

"If you were in the area or have any information that might help with our investigation, please don't hesitate to get in touch."
