Jetstar has announced a major change to its cabin baggage policy that will see passengers pay if they want to store a larger carry-on bag in the overhead locker. From February 2027, the airline's base fare will include only one small bag that fits under the seat in front of the passenger. Those who want to bring a larger cabin bag for the overhead locker, or whose bag exceeds the under-seat size limits, will need to purchase the airline's Priority Carry-on option, which also includes priority boarding.

The airline said the move is aimed at reducing congestion around overhead lockers, speeding up boarding and giving customers more choice by allowing them to pay only for the services they need. Under the new policy, the previous 7kg carry-on weight limit will also be removed, with overhead locker bags allowed to weigh up to 10kg, while under-seat bags will no longer be subject to the 7kg limit.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. Some travellers welcomed the option of paying only for the baggage they need, particularly those who typically travel with just a small personal item. Others argued that charging for overhead locker space is another example of airlines introducing additional fees on top of base fares, making it harder to compare the true cost of flying.

The move has also reignited a broader discussion about what should be included in a basic airfare. While low-cost carriers have long charged separately for extras such as checked baggage, seat selection and in-flight meals, opinions are divided on whether access to overhead locker space should also become an optional add-on.
