Yorkshire Water trials enzyme technology to tackle fatbergs

A SEWAGE giant is hoping to tackle fatbergs head-on by using an innovative enzyme dosing technology.

Yorkshire Water is targeting 15 new sites across Yorkshire, including Beverley, Haxby, Thirsk, and Castleford, in partnership with Cobra Hydro UK Ltd.

The technology uses Bio-Blocks®, which dissolve slowly to release microbes and enzymes that break down fats, oils, and grease (FOG), helping to reduce blockages and prevent pollution.

Nathan Canavan, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: "We are hoping that the success of the dosing blocks trial in York can be replicated in other places that have been prone to blockages caused by fats, oils and grease.

"As well as installing Bio-Blocks®, our network protection team will be engaging with all food serving establishments in the areas we've identified, to raise awareness of the importance of correct grease management."

Yorkshire Water will also provide advice to food service businesses on installing grease traps and using licensed waste contractors to safely dispose of FOG.

Clint Jackson, business development director at Cobra Hydro UK Ltd, said: "We're extremely pleased that our enzyme Bio-Block® have had the desired results and we are looking forward to seeing the success of this safe, innovative and environmentally friendly technology."
