Young people offered chance to fly hot air balloon

Young people have been offered a rare chance to trial different jobs within the hot air balloon industry, including flying one while tethered.

It follows a new partnership between Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and Young Bristol, which runs youth clubs and an outdoor employment programme.

Members of Young Bristol were taught how to set up, fly and pack away a balloon. Amir Ashant said following the session, he is considering becoming a pilot.

Lee Williams, chief executive Young Bristol, said: "The partnership will allow us to open doors for young people to discover new career opportunities, grow their confidence and develop essential life skills."

Ashant said the experience has taught him a lot.

"It feels so peaceful and relaxing when you're up there, you don't think about anything else," he added.

Crystal Liu, who was part of the experience, said: "It's amazing. Who would be able to experience this at four or five in the morning?"

The pilot at the session has been flying for the majority of his life [BBC]

Pilot Phil Hooper assisted the group during the trial.

He has been ballooning for more than 25 years, starting at age 11. He said that the job has given him more confidence and is great for character building.

"I've got a young family now; my children love it. I've got two young kids and my wife loves it as well. It's just part of the family," he added.

Clive Bailey, the flight director for the fiesta, said it takes a lot of discipline, teamwork, safety and banter to get the aircraft out of the bag and in the air.

Bailey said: "Kids just don't get an opportunity to do this, so I think what the fiesta and Albert Goodman are doing is giving the opportunity. Some of these young adults will become pilots, I'm absolutely certain."
