Inside Google’s US$10m Data Acquisition of Spirit Airlines

Following Spirit Airlines’s bankruptcy declaration and total shutdown on 2 May of this year, the defunct carrier had entered bankruptcy court auctions to sell off its remaining corporate assets and pay down roughly US$8.1bn in debt.

According to Bloomberg Law, Google has now emerged as the winning bidder for the airline’s vast digital repositories, securing the assets for US$10m.

In doing so, the tech giant beat out AI recruitment firm Mercor, which submitted a US$7.5m bid. The US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York has designated Mercor as the backup buyer should the primary deal fail to finalise.

Google plans to use the acquired files to train its AI Large Language Models (LLMs), with court filings revealing that the acquisition grants Google access to an exceptionally vast and specialised operational dataset.

The ongoing World Humanoid Robot Game in Beijing is a spectacle on the fast track, with two robots – Tiangong Ultra and Lightning – running faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record in the 100-metre. Yet, after slamming into thick mats past the finish line, it seems that breaking records is much easier for these machines than pumping the brakes for a real factory shift.

Nevertheless, the leap forward from last year’s inaugural games is striking. During the 2025 competition, the winning 100-metre sprint time dragged past 20 seconds, whereas this year’s humanoids have shaved off more than half that duration.
