Canada: Government Promotes the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Production
The Government of Canada has introduced the national AI for All strategy to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence across sectors including agriculture through investments, legislation and training programs. The strategy aims to increase AI adoption from just over 12% today to 60% by 2034 nationwide.
Agriculture among priority sectors
Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled AI for All, Canada's new national artificial intelligence strategy, which includes investments, legislation and programs designed to increase AI adoption from just over 12% today to 60% by 2034. The strategy is expected to generate an additional USD 200 billion in economic growth and create 250,000 new AI-related jobs over the next five years. For agriculture, the announcement reflects growing federal recognition of AI's potential to improve crop production, reduce costs and strengthen agricultural competitiveness through precision farming technologies. According to the press release, AI is already helping Canadian farmers increase crop yields and reduce input costs through precision agriculture tools and data-driven decision-making.The government's plan includes measures to help small and medium-sized businesses adopt AI technologies, with agriculture identified as one of the priority sectors alongside healthcare, energy, transportation, manufacturing, robotics and government services. Under the strategy, businesses will receive support to adopt AI in ways that improve productivity, support workers and drive innovation.Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation:
"Canada's new AI for All strategy is about putting artificial intelligence to work for Canadians. It will give people the confidence to use AI safely, help businesses adopt it, and ensure that more of the value is created here at home. That's how we protect people, grow our economy, reflect our values, and deliver real benefits in everyday life."
Training and talent development
The strategy also includes a National AI Literacy Initiative, which will provide Canadians with foundational AI training opportunities, including practical and sector-specific learning modules. The federal government says the initiative will reach one million post-secondary students and train more than 3,000 educators. In addition, the strategy aims to create up to 90,000 AI-related jobs and work-integrated learning opportunities for young Canadians, helping build the skilled workforce needed to support Canada's growing AI economy.
Promoting responsible AI adoption
While Canada has built a global reputation in AI research and talent, the federal government says adoption has lagged behind many competing nations. The strategy aims to close that gap while ensuring AI technologies are developed and deployed in line with Canadian values and priorities.Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry:
"The global economy is changing rapidly, and our government is focused on ensuring Canadian industry is positioned to compete and win. Our government's new AI strategy will support the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence while boosting productivity and investment, delivering real benefits for Canadians and protecting our digital sovereignty."
The federal government says AI for All was developed following extensive consultations conducted in 2025, which generated more than 11,000 contributions from workers, entrepreneurs, researchers, students and community leaders across Canada. For Canadian agriculture, the strategy reflects growing momentum behind AI-based technologies that can support crop management decisions, improve efficiency and help producers navigate increasingly complex production environments.Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada:
"AI is already here. The question is whether it will improve life for all Canadians or benefit only a few. AI can shorten emergency room wait times and make a small business more competitive, if it is governed according to Canadian values and with the clear goal of improving life for all Canadians.""That's why we need a bold new strategy: AI for All. We will build trust so that every Canadian is empowered to use this technology safely and confidently. AI that makes Canada stronger for everyone - that is our mission."
