Earlier this spring, the federal mail service announced the conversion of about 136,000 addresses in 13 communities from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in late 2026 or early 2027. Work is underway in these communities to identify and finalize community mailbox sites. At that time, fewer than 25 per cent of Canadian addresses still received mail at home.

About 81,000 addresses in B.C. are up for the next round of changeovers in 2027, including: Colwood, Esquimalt, Langford, Saanich, Songhees Nation (New Songhees 1A), Victoria and View Royal. Elsewhere in B.C. Burnaby, Coquitlam, Kelowna, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Westbank First Nation (Tsinstikeptum 10 and Tsinstikeptum 9) and West Kelowna are also anticipated to get community mailboxes next year, Canada Post confirmed Thursday (June 11).

Converting an address from door-to-door delivery to a community mailbox typically takes months. Canada Post says it will engage with local governments as it identifies suitable locations and notify residents and businesses of impending changes to their mail delivery. As sites are finalized, residents will be notified of the location of their community mailbox. They will also receive notice and keys before any change to their delivery, according to the Crown corporation.

The changes come as a cost-saving measure, with door-to-door delivery costing about 75 per cent more than delivery to a community mailbox at $284 per address compared to $162, according to a May 2025 Industrial Inquiry Commission.

A list of the postal codes scheduled for conversion to date, along with additional information on community mailbox conversions, is available at www.canadapost.ca/ourtransformation.
