Stories on the St. Pius X High School shooting, Wolfe Island ferry win silver

Two CBC Ottawa stories have been honoured by the Canadian Association of Journalists at their annual awards banquet.

Reporter Guy Quenneville and videographer Mathieu Deroy won silver in the community broadcast category for their story looking at the 1975 murder of Kim Rabot and the shooting at St. Pius X High School.

50 years later, an Ottawa high schooler’s violent unravelling still leaves deep scars

The story was the culmination of months of in-depth research and interviews with survivors of the shooting, as well as friends and family of the victims.

Reporter Daniel Taekema also won silver in the Hugo Rodrigues award for community news category for his in-depth story on the Wolfe Islander IV after the Kingston-area ferry was damaged and spent months in dry dock.

Taekema's work was driven by freedom of information requests and his quest for answers on a matter of crucial importance to the Wolfe Island community, which depends on the ferry to get to and from the mainland.

Saturday's awards banquet, which took place at Carleton University, concluded the association's national conference in Ottawa.

Judges selected this year’s finalists from 561 submissions. In all, CBC was nominated for 14 awards and took home eight.
