Edmonton weather: A burst of snow before highs in the teens again next week

Travel this long weekend may get dicey, with the Edmonton area and much of west-central Alberta expected to be sheathed by snow come Sunday.

A special weather statement from Environment Canada Saturday morning warns the first snowfall of the season will land in central and northern Alberta, with "highly variable" amounts.

"Confidence is low that snowfall accumulations will occur in Calgary and areas to its east, but more significant snowfall may occur against the southern Alberta foothills as well as areas along the U.S. border including the Cypress Hills," warns the statement.

Motorists should prepare for changing and deteriorating travel conditions, monitoring alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

In the Edmonton area Saturday, wet snow — with whipping winds gusting up to 40 km/h — is expected to result in about 2 cm of the white stuff accumulating, the high of 1 C high dipping to -1 C overnight.

Snowfall in the Edmonton region will end by Sunday, the high perking up to 4 C with a low of 1 C overnight.

Holiday Monday has sun back in store with a high of 9 C followed by temperatures back up in the teens for the remainder of the week.
