Toronto police officer charged after CBSA intercepts firearm suppressors
Toronto police confirmed the man is a constable, has been suspended following CBSA investigation
A Toronto police officer has been charged with multiple firearm offences after an investigation by the Canada Border Services Agency.
On July 23, CBSA officers at a facility in Mississauga intercepted a package from the United States that contained two complete firearm suppressors. Investigators with the CBSA determined a 47-year-old Brampton man was the suspected recipient of the package.
The CBSA executed a search warrant at the man's Brampton home on Sept. 24 and seized three non-restricted firearms, a prohibited suppressor, digital devices and ammunition, the agency said in a news release Thursday.
The man is now facing four charges, including one count of smuggling prohibited devices and one count of importing prohibited devices while knowing it was unauthorized.
Toronto police spokesperson Nadine Ramadan confirmed to CBC News that the man is a constable that has worked with the service for seven years.
"Our understanding is that the charges laid by the CBSA are unrelated to his duties as a Toronto Police officer," she said.
He has been suspended with pay and notified that the police chief intends to suspend him without pay after the mandated 60-day period under the Community Safety and Policing Act, Ramadan said.
