Team USA survived a major scare from Italy in the FIBA Women's World Cup in Germany on Sunday, hacking out a three-point win, 55-52.

It was the lowest scoring output of Team USA since 1971 and the closest winning margin since 1979.

Italy had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Cecilia Zandalasini missed her last-gasp three-pointer.

Jackie Young was the only player who scored in double digits for Team USA with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, a testament to Italy's dogged defense, which was on full display in the second half. Young added four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Breanna Stewart, who had five points on 1-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds, acknowledged the strong performance of the Italians, according to a report from ESPN.

"Obviously, Italy really kind of mucked up the game for us a little bit. It made it difficult for us to score. They are a tough team. Tons of respect for what they've done," said Stewart, who is looking for her fourth gold medal in the tournament.

The veteran forward, however, added that she was "proud of the resiliency" of their powerhouse unit.

Stewart scored the go-ahead bucket, 51-50, with 3:20 remaining in the game, which saw eight lead changes. Young and Chelsea Gray followed it up with a pair of baskets, while Team USA also made key stops to get more cushion.

The four-time defending champions finished with 34.1% shooting, including 1-of-12 from long distance.

Team USA's performance versus Italy was a stark contrast to its demolition of China, 94-61, in the first game.

Team USA will battle the Czech Republic on Monday.
