French media: Morocco has what it takes to become leading African Hub for data centers, artificial intelligence

Morocco has multiple assets that could enable it to emerge as a future continental leader in the fields of data centers and artificial intelligence (AI), “The Conversation France” reports.

In an article published Saturday on its website focusing on the prospects for developing Morocco’s digital sector, the publication highlights the Kingdom’s potential amid rapidly growing demand for digital infrastructure, particularly driven by the development of artificial intelligence.

Morocco benefits notably from a strategic geographical location, close to Europe and at the crossroads of several regions, as well as telecommunications infrastructure that enhances its attractiveness for digital activities, the media outlet notes.

The development of data centers is thus emerging as a strategic issue for the Kingdom, as the rise of AI requires ever-greater storage and computing capacities. For The Conversation, this development is opening up new prospects for countries capable of bringing together digital infrastructure, energy and international connectivity.

The article also highlights Morocco’s energy potential, particularly through the development of renewable energy sources. This growing availability of low-carbon energy, the media outlet says, is an asset in a sector that is particularly electricity-intensive, as digital operators face the need to reduce the environmental footprint of their infrastructure.

According to The Conversation France, these various factors could enable Morocco to capitalize on the rapid growth of the African digital infrastructure market and strengthen its position as a regional hub for cloud and artificial intelligence-related services.

The development of this sector also represents a digital sovereignty challenge. The ability to host and process data on the African continent addresses growing concerns over data control, cybersecurity and dependence on infrastructure located outside the continent, the publication notes.

For The Conversation France, Morocco’s potential does not, however, rely solely on infrastructure. The availability of specialized skills, the development of education and research, as well as the emergence of a technology ecosystem, are key conditions for turning investments in data centers into a genuine competitive advantage.
