“Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” movie officially set for 2029

The Game of Thrones movie gets an official release date.

Titled Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, the film will hit theaters in the summer of 2029.

The movie's title points to Aegon "the Conqueror" Targaryen and the unification of Westeros.

The Game of Thrones franchise's first movie spinoff is officially heading to theaters.

Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, directed by Owen Harris (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) and writer Beau Willimon (House of Cards), will be released through Warner Bros. Pictures on June 1, 2029.

Officially story details haven't been revealed, but the title of the film points to Aegon I Targaryen, a.k.a. Aegon the Conqueror, who flew his forces on dragonback from Old Valyria to conquer and unite the kingdoms of Westeros.

The release date continues HBO's mission of giving viewers at least one Game of Thrones project a year. 2027 will bring A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, 2028 will bring the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon, and 2029 will give us Aegon's Conquest.

Aegon the Conqueror was the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms who forged the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated foes. He had two sisters, who became his brides. According to the text, written by author George R. R. Martin in his literary works, Aegon married older sister Visenya out of duty and younger sister Rhaenys out of desire.

Members of House Targaryen and House Velaryon fled their ancestral home of Old Valyria after "the Doom," a catastrophic cataclysm that destroyed the capitol city and the surrounding peninsula.

Aegon rode the dragon that came to be known as Balerion the Black Dread. Visenya rode Vhagar, while Rhaenys rode Meraxes. Vhagar is featured prominently on HBO's House of the Dragon as the beast flown by Prince Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell).

House of the Dragon continues to build upon the Targaryen history established by Martin in the books. Season 1 notably gave more context about the conquering of Westeros. As detailed by the late King Viserys (Paddy Considine), Aegon experienced a vision — one of the Targaryen dragondreams — which he called "A Song of Ice and Fire," the name of Martin's main Game of Thrones book series.

The Conqueror saw a devastating winter pouring forth from the north to consume all life. He feared that if a Targaryen, with the power of dragonfire at their command, did not bring Westeros together, then mankind wouldn't stand a chance against this threat. We now know this winter to be the White Walkers.

Writer Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II, Terminator Zero) was previously working on a TV show treatment for the Aegon the Conqueror's storyline, though it's presumed that project isn't moving forward.

Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff long hoped for a theatrical release pegged to the final season of the mothership HBO series, though those plans never came to fruition. HBO then officially confirmed the development of a movie back in 2024. Details have been coming out piecemeal since then.
