Google celebrates India’s 80th Independence Day with colourful patchwork Doodle:It honors our rich heritage with 22 regional textile traditions and unity in diversity

India’s Independence Day is getting a colourful digital makeover this year. Google has marked August 15 with a special Doodle inspired by the country’s rich textile traditions, bringing together vibrant patterns, traditional motifs and regional craftsmanship.

The artwork celebrates India’s cultural diversity while giving Google’s familiar logo a distinctly Indian look.

A colourful tribute to India’s textile heritage

The Doodle features a vibrant patchwork inspired by 22 regional textile traditions, showcasing the variety of India’s traditional crafts and artistic styles. Designed by artist Namrata Kumar, the artwork brings together diverse patterns and motifs to highlight how India’s many cultural traditions converge into one.

Rather than simply featuring the Indian flag, the Doodle uses textiles, colours and craftsmanship to represent the country’s cultural identity.

Why Google creates a special Doodle

Google regularly changes its homepage logo to mark important occasions, people and events. These designs, known as Google Doodles, highlight significant moments and cultural celebrations. For Independence Day, the Doodle serves as a digital tribute to India’s freedom and its diverse cultural heritage.

India became independent from British rule on August 15, 1947. The day is marked across the country with flag-hoisting ceremonies, patriotic events, cultural programmes and celebrations.

India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day in 2026, nearly eight decades after gaining freedom.

The celebrations also look towards the country’s long-term goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, when India will mark 100 years of independence. The government’s broader ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’ vision focuses on areas including economic growth, innovation, technology, sustainability and youth participation.

A celebration of unity in diversity

From traditional textiles to music, crafts and regional art, India’s cultural identity is shaped by hundreds of distinct traditions.

Google’s Independence Day Doodle brings many of these influences together in a single artwork, offering a colourful reminder of the idea of unity in diversity that continues to define India.
