The rich history and diverse heritage of Alberta will be in the spotlight on Monday.

Albertans have celebrated Heritage Day on the first Monday of every August since 1974, and while it's not one of the province's nine statutory holidays, it's part of the long weekend for many.

Here's what to know for Heritage Day 2026 in Calgary, including events and closures.

Events happening across the city

Heritage Day festivities at Heritage Park will consist of live cultural performances including Mexican and Greek dancing, and traditional Chinese and Caribbean music, as well as guest speakers and other activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Calgary Folk Arts Council Heritage Day Festival runs at Eau Claire Plaza from noon to 6 p.m., and includes cultural exhibits, handcrafted artwork and community booths celebrating the cultures of more than 30 countries.

Taste of Calgary runs at Cowboys Park through the long weekend, giving visitors the opportunity to sample food from across the city. Monday marks the final day of the festival, and runs 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day.

The Tour de Bowness Race and Festival is back for its 23rd year on Monday. The race is on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the festival bringing local food, live music and street performers to the streets of Bowness from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All city-operated arenas, indoor pools and fitness centres will be closed, and registered programs, swimming lessons and drop-in programs will not be offered.

All seven driving ranges and municipal golf courses across five locations will be open.

Buses, CTrains and On Demand will run on a Sunday level of service.

Free parking is available in on-street ParkPlus zones, while weekend rates apply at Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots.

For people looking to spend the day outdoors, keep in mind that there is a fire advisory in effect in Calgary and a fire ban in Banff National Park due to high temperatures and dry conditions.
