‘If Smit Was Salim…’: Anand Ranganathan Slams 'Left-Liberal Identity Politics’ Over Flydubai Pilot
Anand Ranganathan weighs in on the Left-Liberal narrative on Indian Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar, whose actions during the FZ1073 cockpit emergency have been widely credited with helping save 174 passengers. Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene and avert a disaster. Ranganathan argues that the captain has become an “inconvenient hero” for some critics because of his identity. “If he was not Smit… if he was Smith or Salim, everything would have been completely different,” he claims, accusing sections of the Indian commentariat of applying ideological double standards.
