Attacks have complicated 'already fraught' peace talks, E.U. foreign affairs chief says

The recent exchanges of fire between the U.S. and Iran have further complicated “already fraught talks” to end the war, according to the European Union's foreign affairs chief.

Calling Iran's attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait "unacceptable," Kaja Kallas said in a post on X that Iran had violated the memorandum of understanding it signed with the U.S. by attacking ships near the Strait of Hormuz.

“Freedom of navigation must be unimpeded,” she said.

Ultimately this is a dispute over who controls over the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping lane for 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas.

Iran insists it has sovereignty over the strait, and wants commercial vessels to only use routes it has approved, attacking vessels if they don’t comply. An Iranian official told reporters in Tehran that ships should also pay “maritime service fees” to the Islamic Republic.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s chief negotiator, said this morning that his country “will not fold on the issue” and “the era of bullying and extortion are over.”

The U.S. says passage though Hormuz must be unobstructed and free.

Negotiations have been paused while millions of Iranians this week mourn the country’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was killed by the U.S. and Israel at the start of the war.

During the weeklong funeral there have been calls for revenge, and now the peace deal with the U.S. is in question.

Military bases in southern Iran hit by enemy projectiles, Iran says

Two military bases near the southern province of Bushehr were hit by enemy projectiles this morning, according to the region's deputy governor.

Ehsan Jahanian said facilities in Dashti County and Choghadak city were struck.

U.S. conduct at World Cup similar to its foreign policy, Iran's president says

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian today compared U.S. conduct at the World Cup to its approach to foreign policy.

“The U.S. government’s conduct as World Cup host follows its familiar foreign policy: bending rules, bullying rivals, creating obstacles, and cheating,” Pezeshkian said in a post on X on Wednesday.

“This is their MAGA playbook,” he said, adding: “Iran rejects such games. We stand firmly for our rights.”

Before it was knocked out, Iran's team had previously complained about unfair treatment in the World Cup.

U.S. authorities also required the team⁠ to enter the U.S. within ​24 hours ⁠of a match and leave the same day, leading team coach Amir Ghalenoei to say ⁠Iran was the “most oppressed” team in the tournament. These guidelines were loosened after the team's first two matches.

Revolutionary Guard navy member killed in U.S. attack

The Revolutionary Guard says a member of its naval forces was killed this morning in the port city of Bandar Mahshahr.

They were killed "while confronting enemy drones after being struck by shrapnel from a projectile," the Guard said, according to a statement carried b the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Oil prices jump nearly 6% after Trump says ceasefire with Iran is ‘over’

Oil prices surged nearly 6% after Trump said that the interim agreement with Iran is “over,” though he will allow talks to continue.

The price of Brent crude oil jumped 5.6% to more than $78 a barrel. U.S. benchmark crude surged 5.8% to $74.55 a barrel.

Crude prices had declined recently from spikes well above $100 a barrel to around the levels they were at before the war with Iran began in late February.

In share trading, the future for the S&P 500 edged 0.1% lower and that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.4%.

NATO chief Rutte calls U.S. strikes on Iran ‘absolutely necessary’

Before the second day of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, the alliance’s chief said Iran’s violations of the ceasefire made it “crucial” for the U.S. to forcefully react.

In a separate meeting with Trump, Mark Rutte told the president, "I think what you did last night was absolutely necessary. It was a very strong response."

Trump says Iran ceasefire is 'over'

Asked whether the ceasefire and memorandum of understanding with Iran is now over after the latest attacks, Trump said it was.

"It’s a very interesting question to me. I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore," Trump said.

"They’re scum. You know what scum is? They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by people, and they’re vicious, violent people."

He added: "And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over."

Trump did also say that he would allow U.S. negotiators to keep talking with their counterparts, but asked if talks with Tehran will resume, he said, “I don’t care. They can talk, but I think they’re wasting their time. They’re a bunch of lying guys.”

Iran has not commented on whether it considers the ceasefire or interim agreement between the two sides over.

'We hit them very hard,' Trump says

The president made additional comments ahead of his bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

"We have attacked very powerfully last night the very dangerous people from Iran," Trump told reporters in Ankara. "They’re sick. There’s something wrong with them. We say go and do your funeral stuff, and instead of that, they start shooting rockets at ships yesterday, and so we hit them very hard last night, very hard. I would say 20 to 120 times tougher."

Trump was referring to the funeral events being held for Iran's slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which had put talks between the two sides on hold.

Trump labels Iran 'a bunch of scum' after new attacks

The president has addressed the overnight exchange of attacks with Iran while meeting with the head of NATO at the summit in Turkey.

“They’re a bunch of scum, if you want to know the truth. They’re a bunch of scum… I don’t like ‘em. They’re evil people,” Trump said.

Sirens sound in Bahrain following fresh attacks

Sirens have sounded repeatedly in Bahrain overnight and into the morning after Iran launched a wave of fresh attacks on the Gulf.

"The siren has been sounded," Bahrain's Ministry of Interior said in one post on X about an hour ago. The ministry urged residents to "remain calm and head to the nearest safe place."

It was one of a string of warnings from the interior ministry overnight and into this morning.

New explosions reported in Iranian port city

The sound of several explosions was heard in the Iranian port city of Bushehr this morning after the U.S. and Iran traded fresh attacks overnight, Iran’s state-affiliated Mehr News reported.

The news agency said reports had also circulated claiming that Kharg Island had also fallen under attack — but that its correspondent denied those reports.

NBC News was not immediately able to independently verify the situation on the ground,.

Iran targets American military sites in the Gulf after wave of U.S. attacks

Iran launched attacks against American bases in the Gulf, retaliating for a new wave of strikes by the U.S. military after it said Tehran hit three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The intense exchange raised fears for the fragile ceasefire as the two countries try to agree to a lasting end to the war that began with U.S.-Israeli strikes in February.

It came as President Donald Trump was in neighboring Turkey for a summit of NATO, the U.S.-led military alliance. Iran, meanwhile, was holding a mass, dayslong funeral for its slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
