Man released after car drives into crowd at Quebec festival, injuring 6

Provincial police have released the man who drove a car into crowds at the Festival Western in Saint-Tite, Que., on Saturday, injuring six people, with a promise to appear in court.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) told CTV News that its ongoing investigation has confirmed the incident was not premeditated.

Police said alcohol has been ruled out as a factor, and that the man, in his 20s, had been involved in several altercations before the incident occurred.

“He was arrested for dangerous driving causing bodily harm and also fleeing the scene of the collision causing bodily harm,” an SQ spokesperson told CTV News.

He is expected to appear in court at a later date where he will face charges.

The six people who were injured and transported to hospital, four men and two women, aged 17 to 21, are expected to recover.

St-Joseph Blvd. between du Couvent and du Moulin streets will remain closed until the festival ends Sunday.
